Guitar Questions I Answer on Quora

What would be recommended to a person wanting to start up and learn guitar?

Get a guitar that is playable. Doesn’t have to be expensive. Borrow one if possible. There are plenty of people with guitars siting around collecting dust. If you borrow one, no risk in case you find it’s not for you.

Get a guru. A pro. Friends might teach habits that are hard to break. Interview gurus first and find someone that can really play and really teach. You can learn by yourself, but if you can’t afford it, why not take a shortcut. If you can’t afford an instructor, there is a lot of info on the net…free. I taught myself in the 60s but I learned the most and improved the fastest when I found my guru.

Be in it for the long game. Improve everyday. Practice everyday. I love sports so I practiced scales and chords while watching ballgames. Don’t make excuses. There is ALWAYS time to practice.

Most important, don’t quit. I’ve been playing for over 50 years and I still practice almost daily, learn new songs, new scales, new chords and anything else I think might help me or others who might want some help. Hope this helps. Remember the first 50 years are the hardest, hopefully.

When you become great stay humble.
